â€Å"Osu is like leprosy in the minds of our people.† When Obi makes the decision to marry Clara, an osu, both the Umoufian community, and his parents strongly oppose this marriage, as it is a union which will bring suffering to all of Obi’s future descendants. This conflict causes Obi’s familial relationships to crumble, which serves as one of the factors leading up to his final descent into corruption, the most notable relationship being that of the one between Obi and his mother. Achebe uses this to show readers the prominent role of culture in the life of Nigerians, that an individual whose ancestors had been devoted to the gods would be shunned and alienated from society. The reaction of Obi’s parents towards his engagement to Clara is logical and understandable. Marrying Clara would cause Obi’s children and future descendants to become outcasts in the Nigerian society. Obi’s father even points out that osu is â€Å"like leprosy†, emphasising the social stigma surrounding people possessing the label. By marrying Clara, Obi will be dooming all of his future children. The fact that Obi is his parents’ only son makes this decision even more significant, as he is the only hope of continuing the Okonkwo family, and his actions would lead to the entire family tree becoming tainted. The insanity behind deciding to marry an osu can also be seen when Clara bluntly tells Obi â€Å"I am an osu†, and expect Obi to immediately understand why they cannot marry. As someone who herself bears the label, she of all people would know the degree of isolation of osu from society, further emphasising the consequences of Obi marryin g Clara. Thus, Achebe makes it clear to readers that Isaac and Hannah’s response to Obi’s engagement is natural, and that Obi is the one who has been so detached from his own culture that he does not see the flaw behind his decision. Obi’s father tries to convince Obi to rethink his decision of marrying Clara for the sake of his children. He warns Obi that his future generations will â€Å"curse his memory†, and that it is a terrible thing for a man to â€Å"curse his own child†. Isaac says he was cursed by Obi’s grandfather, implying that Obi’s decision is the curse. On the other hand, Isaac might be trying to show Obi that his decision will curse his descendants, and that doing so is horrible. Isaac may also be referring to his own separation from the society after deciding to convert to Christianity. He says that he ‘walked through fire to become a Christian’, showing that he has an inkling of an idea as to what Obi and his future generations will have to go through if he were to marry Clara. However, converting to Christianity is in no way comparable to marrying an osu, and Isaac references this, saying that â€Å"it is deeper than that†. Thus, readers ca n understand that Isaac Okonkwo opposes the marriage in an effort to prevent the curse from being passed on through Obi’s decision. Obi’s father shows that he does not want Obi to personally suffer by marrying Clara. As a Christian, Isaac is not personally against the idea of marrying osu, as he has, as Obi points out, â€Å"seen the light of the Gospel†. However, he understands the consequences of marrying an osu, and still tells Obi ‘you cannot marry the girl’ as the Umuofian society would never accept the marriage. Isaac understands Obi’s view of there being nothing wrong with marrying an osu, but because he does not want Obi to be isolated from his kinsmen, Isaac desperately tries to make Obi change him mind. To Isaac, community is crucial, especially to Obi who lives away from his village as Isaac says that in a foreign land, â€Å"one should always move near one’s kinsman’. Isaac is less concerned about how Obi’s decision would affect himself, and cares more the social implications which would affect and harm Obi in the future. Obi’s mother, compared to his father, has a much bigger reaction. When she finds out of Obi’s engagement, she threatens suicide, saying that â€Å"you (Obi) shall have my blood on your head, because I shall kill myself†. This is particularly significant and shocking, especially when considering the fact that Hannah is a Christian; in Christianity, suicide is a sin that will lead one to end up in hell. Throughout the novel, it is shown that Hannah is more traditional and cultural than Obi’s father, but have accepted and complied to the ways of Christianity due to her husband, and is a devout Christian woman. Obi’s engagement has such a large impact on her that she forgoes her loyalty to Christianity and reverts back to her cultural believes, showing the extent to which she opposes the engagement. However, Hannah seems to also acknowledge Obi’s stubbornness and subconsciously knows that Obi will persist with the marriage regardless of oppositio n, and tells Obi to marry Clara only after she has died. She disapproves of the marriage, and refuses to witness it happening. She, unlike Isaac, is personally against osu, and her threat of suicide leaves a larger impact on Obi who has always seen himself as having a closer bond with his mother. It is ironic how Obi was previously confident that he would be able to convince his mother, as this implies that Obi may not be as close to his mother as he initially thought. The reluctance of Obi’s parents in accepting his engagement is expected. In fact, Obi may be fortunate for being brought up in a less traditional, Christian family, else his father would have likely had a bigger reaction. The fact that both of his parents opposes this union, shows how bad of a decision it is, on a personal, familial, and communal level. Achebe emphasises Obi’s idealism and detachment from his own culture — both crucial factors which leads to his descent into corruption. Readers realise the marriage of Clara and Obi is impossible — a fact that Obi himself unfortunately refuses to accept until it is too late.

In light of this, we may be compelled to ask ourselves if there are limits for helping a person, especially if their life is at stake. How the Characters Have brought out the theme of Doubling The narrator has depicted Turkey and Nippers, the two scriveners as being opposite of each other. While Nippers is not produc tive and unable to work in morning hours at the narrators organization, Turkeys has similar characteristics, but in the afternoon hours whereby; for many days, he is seen drunk while in the office. Further, the ambition of Nipper reflect Turkey’s resignation to his position, as well as the eventfulness of his job. This difference in job ambitions is probably derived from their age differences. Nipper who is relatively younger than Turkey has ambitions of advancing his career into something more than a scrivener. On the other hand, Turkey laments to the narrator that he should consider his age while evaluating the issue of productivity. In addition, the vices of these men are also parallel to one another and they are appropriate according to their age. Alcoholism as a vice develops with time. On the other hand, ambition is a feature that is most volatile among the youth who are interested in developing themselves, their careers and in changing their lives. Corporate Discontent Bartebly’s repeated statement of â€Å"I prefer not to† has been considered as a critique of the rising materialism that was prevalent among the culture of many American organizations at that time. It should be noted that the particular law firm discussed in this story was in Wall Street, a fact pointed out by the story’s subtitle which is the Story of Wall Street†. At   the time when this book was written, Wall Street was a hub of   financial activity in U.S and Melville just like many other authors at this time were sensitive to financial matters, and their management in the American culture (Marx 603). In light of this, Bartleby’s stubbornness in refusing to do what he is being asked could be considered as a rebellion to economic control.    Setting The setting of this story is in a law office, with occupants who are depicted as men or rather employees with odd characters, and who are only connected to their work. In most cases, a business -based building gives no room for any personal interaction and neither does Melville’s context (Abrams491). In particular, we could learn nothing from both the narrator and other characters beyond their office life and activities. In light of this, we have to ask ourselves if such a story would be possible if it was in an alternate setting. The crisis of the story is highlighted and its emotional nature brought out by the office and city setting. Furthermore, the city and the office setting in particular shows how lonely workers maybe, the work environment, and the day-to-day activities and conflicts that involve employees. The Main Character Right from the story’s beginning; Barleby has been given a striking description. He can be compared as someone who is already dead. In fact, his description befits that of a ghost or a corpse. In particular, he does not portray any form of human passion or expression, one who is engrossed in his indoor work and somebody who alread y beaten. His popular and consistent articulation in â€Å"I would prefer not to† (Melvine) when he does not want to comply may translate to his exhaustion instead of mere deviance. This is hereby; used by the narrator to showcase how some workers are exploited and reach a point where they can no longer do what is expected of them. Interestingly, Bartleby gets away with his uncooperativeness despite the fact that he a passive character, subsequently casting a spell over the narrator. He   makes it   clear   to the narrator   that his refusal   does not imply that   he is incapable of doing   it not   that he will   not   do it, but he prefers not to do it. The statement that â€Å"I will prefer not† (Melvine) which he repeats frequently is an emphasis that portrays his feelings and emotional response instead of some ethical or philosophical choice. Bartleby gradually begins to be detached from the world in phases when he begins with the statement th at â€Å"I prefer not to†. He continues to reiterate on this statement and renouncing other aspects in the world including the worldly duties. This simply means that though Bartleby was a man who liked his job and that he was industrious, he had come to be discontented with the organization and how it was being run. The behavior was therefore, a form of rebellion to the boss, who is the narrator. Conclusion In this story, the narrator has presented characters as different personalities to depict the individual differences among employees in the business world. Further, the setting has also been used in illustrating the environment in a work setting. However, the author has exaggerated the silliness of the two characters beyond what can be believed in reality. However, this has offered a valuable comic relief in a tale that can be described as both upsetting and somber. This increases the feeling that it is in prose. This also moves the story along faster. There is no rhyme scheme which is also like prose. The rhythm differs in each section of the poem. The poem is written objectively and even though it seems as if Frost is watching the story unfold, he shows a lack of concern for the victim. In the first line of the poem Frost personifies and makes the buzz saw animalistic. This quote proves that, The buzz saw snarled .. This creates a sinister atmosphere and instantly makes the saw seem evil. Frost then attempts to distract the reader from the evil saw by describing the saw dust, using sibilance, Sweet scented stuff. This changes the mood of the poem for the next four lines. It goes onto describe the dramatic Vermont scenery. This quote shows that the boy is not concentrating on the task, Lifted eyes could count, Five mountain ranges one behind the other. This shows that he is not concentrating. The description makes the atmosphere very relaxed and the tension from the first lines is lost. The tension is then restored though in the seventh line as Frost uses repletion to make the saw scarier. Then Frost describes the mundane atmosphere of the day, this creates the feeling that something bad will happen. Then Frost subtly suggests that the boy will die, The day was all but done. I think that day is a metaphor for life and that it indicates that the boy will die. He states it like it is inevitable and unavoidable. Frost obviously foresees the accident as he says that they should have finished earlier, then the accident would have been avoided. Frost then personifies the saw once again as he describes the actual accident. He states that the saw leaps as the boy is surprised by his sisters cry. Frost describes the accident as a meeting between the boys hand and the buzz saw. This is a really impersonal thing to write. There is no real gory description of the accident. This leaves the image to the readers imagination it is horribly effective. Frost then states that the boy, Must have given his hand. This indicates that the boy knew that he knew that he was going to chop his hand off, strange as this may seem. The Poet then describes the boys reaction to the accident, Frost describes the boys initial as a Rueful laugh this shows that the boy has some idea of what trouble he is in and that he is nervous. He instinctively holds his arm up clenching his hand in place. Frost then describes the folly of child doing a mans work. This changes the poem to a mood of pathos. He then describes the boys death in the last ten lines. Frost never puts in any emotional attachment to the boy. The boy then sees that his injury is very serious. He asks someone to tell the doctor not to cut his hand off. He refers to the person as sister. This person can be interpreted as his sister or a nurse; I like to think that it is nurse as it explains her distinct detachment from the boy. Frost then says that his hand was already detached and there was nothing that the doctor could have done. The doctors then put the boy in, The dark of ether which means a crude form of anaesthetic, ether is also linked strongly with death, which might suggest that the doctor put him to sleep. Frost portrays the boys innocence by describing, Puffed out lips with his breath. Dark also represents death as contrast to day. Frost utterly understates the death forcing you to imagine it. The doctors are shocked at the boys failing pulse and his death. The most shocking line in the poem is the last, Since they were not dead, they turned to their affairs. This illustrates the detachment between people and suggests that death often takes place. This poem confuses and makes me wonder more about the characters. It does make me read in between the lines and it uses metaphors when describing death and life to very good use. This poem is quite obscure. I now move onto Mid-Term Break. The poet Seamus Heaney wrote this autobiographical poem in the twentieth century. Heaney describes his wait to go home at the start of the poem. We dont know what he is waiting for but we have an indication of death when Heaney says that he was Counting bells knelling Funeral bells knell so that indicates death has taken place. You get the idea that has died when his neighbours come and pick him up from school. This shows that his parents cant face him. This strongly indicates that something bad has happened. Another sign of this is when he sees his, Father crying, in the porch this must be a sad thing to greet you as you enter your house. This empathised again as he states that his father, Had always taken funerals in his stride the mention of a funeral certifies the death. Heaney then uses very effective contrast by describing his baby brothers reaction. The first four stanzas are written as if in a daze, he is aware of what is going on around of him but doesnt describe his feelings deeply. He is obviously shocked. He then describes the embarrassment as he is greeted solemnly by old men. It is if they treat him as one of them now that he has suffered a tragedy. Heaney uses enjambment to link together verses to great effect. The old men arent blunt about the death saying that they are, Sorry for my trouble. This builds tension and makes you wonder who has died. In the fourth stanza you learn that Seamus has been away at boarding school. The family are obviously very close to each other. The mother, Coughs out angry tearless sighs this suggests that she has been crying for some time and that the death was violent. In the middle of the fifth stanza Seamus comes out of his daze and describes the arrival of the corpse at his house. Heaney is still building tension in the poem as he still does not name the body. His parents obviously prevent going into the room where the corpse is. His parents are obviously making it as nice possible for him. Heaney finally names the corpse as his brother. This makes more sympathetic for him. It is the first time he has seen his brother in six weeks. This is also very sad. The only way that he describes is that he is paler this shows that he is still a child. The only wound that Seamus can see is, A poppy bruise. This is a reference to the Second World War and the poppy is often associated with death. Heaney finds it difficult to accept that his brother is dead and says it is similar the way his brother looks dead with sleeping. On the last line of the stanza it reveals that his brother was run over with a reference to a bumper. The last stanza is one line long for effect. It reads, a four foot box, a foot for every year. This is shocking as you dont know how old the brother is until this point. This poem makes me very sad and the enjambment is used to great effect. This is a timeless poem as the sadness of death is felt by people every day and you can relate to it. I will now compare and contrast the poems. Both poems are on the theme of death. The layouts are a lot different as in Out, Out is written in one stanza to increase the speed of reading and to show the mood, whereas Mid Term break is eight stanzas long to show the differing emotions of Seamus Heaney. The titles also differ in their help in predicting the theme of the poem. Out, Out- is an obvious reference to death whereas Mid Term break is more obscure. Out, out- is written in first person narrative like Mid Term Break but Mid Term Break is emotional. So it is more subjective. The use of the senses is used in both. In Out, Out- the use of sight is used when he describes the scenery as in Mid-Term break as Heaney describes his dead brother. They use sound in both as Frost describes the saw and in Mid-Term Break when Heaney describes his naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve baby sibling. The sense of smell is used in Out, Out- as Frost describes the saw dust as Sweet scented stuff. The writing techniques are different as personification is used in Out, Out-. The techniques are similar as enjambment is used in both poems and alliteration are used as Frost describes Sweet scented and in Heaneys poem as he describes his brothers coffin as a Four Foot box I conclude that I preferred Mid Term Break as it is a timeless poem with a tear jerking mood. It is easy to relate to and you really feel for Seamus Heaney.
